About Youth Mental Health First Aid

The course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

Developing mental health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Eating disorders

Mental health crisis situations covered are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours


About the training

Youth Mental Health First Aid Program was developed in 2007 to compliment the successful Standard version of MHFA. The Program has been proven to be effective in improving mental health literacy, reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek help. The program has spread to every state and territory in Australia and has been accepted internationally.

Become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider:

Participants who complete this training are eligible to complete an online Accreditation Assessment in order to receive a Mental Health First Aider Certificate of Accreditation valid for 3 years.

About the Presenter

Diane Hickey is an experienced mental health nurse and counsellor with extensive experience in mental health, forensic mental health and primary health care; she worked with Queensland Police Service developing face to face and on-line mental health training in 2002 and has developed and delivered mental health awareness training. She is now a certified Principal Master Trainer of MHFA.  She has a relaxed and humorous presentation style that will make the experience of attending this workshop both fun and informative.
